Northeast golf closes season with 5th place finish at Region XI championship

AMES, IA - The Northeast Community College golf team capped their season by finishing fifth overall at the Region XI championship this weekend at Veenker Memorial Golf Course. Northeast finished with a team score of 332 on day one and 317 on day two for a total of 649 (+73).

"I was proud of my guys for coming back the second day of the tournament after higher scores than normal on the first day," said Kurt Pytleski, Hawks coach. "I think we had a few jitters on day one, and our scores were not consistent with the way we have been playing all season. But we came back the second day and played a little closer to our normal round of golf."

Kirkwood Community College took first place with a two-day total of 601 (+25). Iowa Central Community College totaled 617 (+41) for second, while Des Moines Area Community College finished in third with 625 (+49).

Niall Powell of Kirkwood took medalist honors with a two-day total of 145 (+1), while Iowa Central's Wes Bantenbach was one stroke back.

Brook Klinetobe and Cody Steuter led Northeast, each totaling 160 (+16) over both days to tie for 16th. Cameron Bancroft finished with a 162 (+18); Tyler Lewis, 167 (+23); and Jamy McCoy, 183 (+39).

Klinetobe and Steuter missed qualifying for the National Junior College Athletic Conference (NJCAA) Division II Men's Golf Championship by two strokes. The championship will be held May 23-26 in Mesa, AZ.
