NORFOLK - Northeast Community College welcomed the newest members into its international honor society in a special ceremony held here recently. One-hundred thirty-nine students were installed into Northeast’s Phi Theta Kappa, (PTK), Tau Chi chapter during the spring 2017 induction ceremony held in the Lifelong Learning Center.

Since the installation of Northeast’s Tau Chi chapter in 1996, over 3,000 students have been inducted into the international academic honor society for two-year colleges. For more than 80 years, membership in Phi Theta Kappa has signified a singular honor and a willingness to embrace the Society’s shared commitment to academic excellence.

To be eligible for PTK, students must have earned at least 12 credit hours and achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.5 or above out of a 4.0 system.

Dr. Michael Chipps, president of Northeast Community College, was the featured speaker. He told students that he served as a Phi Theta Kappa advisor for a number of years and had the opportunity to witness firsthand the development and growth of students.

“The values that you espouse, the values that you hold, really do make a difference in your life’s journey, and this is part of your life’s journey. I am so proud of what you students are doing, what you’re receiving and what you’re about to do as soon-graduates, not only of a program of study, but also as Phi Theta Kappans. That will carry forward for a lifetime.”

Additionally, the new inductees pledged commitment to the Community College Completion Corps (C4) initiative. Established by Phi Theta Kappa in 2010, the nationwide initiative aims to increase the number of community college students completing their associate degrees and certificates. The inductees signed cards and a banner as part of the ceremony to show their support.
