Singer's Express & Jazz Machine prepare for spring tour

NORFOLK – The annual Spring Tour by the Northeast Community College Singer’s Express and Jazz Machine is about to get underway. The two groups will travel a combined 2,900 miles in early April.

The Northeast Singer’s Express, an audition swing choir directed by Northeast music department chair and director of choral music activities, Dr. Linda Boullion, will perform at 13 high schools in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota during its annual Spring Tour. The group is accompanied by Margaret Schultz.

The show choir program will include a wide variety of music featuring several different styles and decades. Some of the songs that will be performed include “Dance with Me Tonight,” “Let’s Get Loud,” “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” “Shut Up and Dance,” and selections from the musical, Grease.

The Singer’s Express schedule, with show times in parentheses, includes:

Monday, April 3 – Shelton (8:15 a.m.), Amherst (10:30 a.m.) and Pleasanton (1:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, April 4 –  Onawa, IA (9:30 a.m.) and Adrian, MN (2:15 p.m.)

Wednesday, April 5 – Tilden (8:15 a.m.), Lynch (10:45 a.m.), and Colome, SD (2:10 p.m.)

Thursday, April 6 –  Sterling (10 a.m.) and Roseland (2:40 p.m.)

Friday, April 7 – Oakland (8:30 a.m.), Mead (10:30 a.m.) and Waco (2 p.m.)

Members of the Northeast Singer’s Express, listed first by hometown, include: Central City, Brittney Jefferson; Clay Center, Katelynn Piper; David City, Staci Hoeft; Grand Island, Garret Johnson; Hartington, Kyle Fischer; Jackson, Nate Brockhaus; Lexington, Rachel Biehl; Mead, Kaylee Carlson; Norfolk, Paige Noble and Sheldon Wattier; Pierce, Sam Halsey; Pilger, Amanda Murphy; and Tilden, Ryan Dusel and Dillon Smith.

The Northeast Jazz Machine, with Music Instructor Kevin McLouth as director, is a jazz ensemble of select students who perform concerts on campus, play at sporting events, and tour in the spring.  The Jazz Machine will perform in 14 communities in Nebraska and South Dakota on its spring tour.

Some selections include “Manteca,” Lester Leaps In,” “Blue Midnight,” “Crunchy Frog,” and “A Band’s Gotta Do What a Band’s Gotta Do.”  

The Jazz Machine Spring Tour schedule includes:

Monday, April 3 – Winside (8:15 a.m.) Howells (10:45 a.m.) and Schuyler (1:30 p.m.)

Tuesday, April 4 – Viborg, SD (8:15 a.m.), Tyndall, SD (10:30 a.m.) and Platte, SD (2:30 p.m.)               

Wednesday, April 5 – Randolph (8:00 a.m.), Osmond (10:00 a.m.) and Chambers (1:30 p.m.)

Thursday, April 6 – Hastings (8:50 a.m.) and Palmer (1:45 p.m.) 

Friday, April 7 – Orchard (8:30 a.m.), Ewing (10:15 a.m.) and Battle Creek (1:30 p.m.)

The public is invited to see either the Northeast Singers Express or Jazz Machine in these free concerts at the local high schools.

Both the Northeast Singers Express and Jazz Machine will return to the Northeast campus to present a Post-Tour Concert on Sunday, April 9, at 2 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center.

            That concert is also free and open to the public.
