COLUMBUS - The Northeast Community College softball team swept Central Community College in a doubleheader here Friday. Final scores were 10-4 and 17-14.

In the first game, Amy Rogers went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Alyson Romey (2-for-4) had a home run and four RBIs. Teanne Edens (7-6) was the winning pitcher.

The second game saw Rogers going 4-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs. Kianna Garza finished 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBIs; Romey (2-for-4), four RBIs and a home run; Claudia Navarro (2-for-4), a double and two RBIs. Moriah Payton (3-7) had the win.

Coach Iris Woodhead said that despite the win, the Hawks' pitching staff and defense struggled in game two.

"It's tough to beat a team that scores 14 runs," she said. "We will not continually be able to score 17 runs a game. We are swinging the bats well right now, and that is credited to our hard work this winter, but defense and pitching aren't relying on fundamentals and that is hurting us."

"We have two weeks to put it all together collectively until our conference play starts."

The Hawks (10-13) will host Iowa Western Community College in Norfolk today. Games will be played at 1 and 3 p.m. at Ta-Ha-Zouka Park.
