Hawks golf team opens spring season at Northeast Invite

NORFOLK - The Northeast Community College golf team is ranked fourth out of four teams after wrapping up the opening round of the Northeast Community College Invitational held at the Norfolk Country Club Monday.

Northeast closed the first day of the two-day tournament at 322. Iowa Lakes Community College leads the pack at 301, while Midland University's B and C teams are ranked second and third with 306 and 312, respectively.

Matt Bennett of Iowa Lakes leads at 1-under 71. In second, Midland C team's Jayson Heck shot 2-over 74. The Hawks' Jamy McCoy is tied for eighth with 5-over 77.

Elsewhere for Northeast, Chase Hopper had an 8-over 80. Dalton Lammers notched a 10-over 82, Brooks Coleman recorded an 11-over 83, and Gage Garnas had a 13-over 85.

In individual play, Northeast's Tyler Lewis tied McCoy for eighth at five-over 77, and Cody Steuter shot a 10-over 82 to sit in a tie for 21st.

The final round of the Northeast Invitational is scheduled for Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Fair Play Golf Course in Norfolk.
