Head Coach Matt Svehla

Head Coach Matt Svehla Matt Svehla is in his 21st full season as the head women’s basketball coach at Northeast Community College. During Coach Svehla’s tenure, the program has posted a 480-149 record. The program no longer plays in the Nebraska Community College Athletic Conference, but for the 18 years that they did, his teams won 15 of 18 Nebraska Community College Conference Championships. Under Coach Svehla, the national rankings have also become a common occurrence. During the past two seasons, Svehla has guided the program to an impressive 54-9 record that included a national tourney appearance in 2012-13. Out of 400 plus 2-year colleges in the country, three of his past five teams have finished in the nation’s top 20 for team GPA. Svehla believes in playing up-tempo basketball, but he always places an emphasis on execution, fundamentals, and defense.

Svehla has had good success in recruiting Nebraska talent, but he also attracts student-athletes from throughout the United States and from around the world. His philosophy has resulted in a high winning percentage, but he is also really proud of the character and attitude that his teams exemplify. Many of his players have gone on to play at the NCAA and NAIA level.

A native of Clarkson, Nebraska, Coach Svehla earned his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and his Master’s Degree from Wayne State College. Svehla also played for the Nebraska Huskers men’s basketball team from 1987-1989. He and his wife, Carol, have two sons, Sedrick and Jamison.
