Closing Procedures
(For Northeast Community College On-Campus Students
and Employees)
2009-2010 Winter Emergency Closing Procedures
FOR NORTHEAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE ON-CAMPUS STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES
IF A LATE START HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED, PLEASE CHECK THE WEB PAGE, AUTOMATED PHONE MESSAGE, KHWK, Channel 22, OR LISTEN TO YOUR FAVORITE RADIO OR TV STATION FOR UPDATES IMMEDIATELY BEFORE LEAVING HOME.
DAYTIME CLASSES (Classes held before 5:00 p.m.)
The decision to close or delay the opening of the college will usually be made by 5:30 a.m. and announced on Norfolk radio stations: 94ROCK-KNEN (94.7 FM), KEXL (106.7 FM), WJAG (780 AM), KUSO-US92 (92.7 FM), KPNO (90.9 FM); Columbus stations KKOT-FM-THE HAWK (93.5 FM), KZEN-KZ 100(100.3 FM); O’Neill’s KBRX (102.9 FM/1350 AM); Yankton’s WNAX (570 AM/104.1 FM) and KKYA (93.1 FM); West Point’s KWPN (107.9 FM/KTIC (840 AM); Wayne’s KTCH (1590 AM/104.9 FM); Ainsworth’s KBRB (92.7 FM/1400 AM), and Sioux City radio stations KGLI (95.5 FM), KKMA (99.5 FM), KMNS (620 AM), KSCJ (1360 AM), KSEZ (97.9 FM), KSFT (107.1 FM), KSUX (105.7 FM), KWSL (1470 AM), and THE NEW 102.3, and tv stations KTIV (NBC), KCAU (ABC), KMEG (CBS), KPTH (Fox) and KHWK/Cable One Channel 22. NECC’s KHWK reaches Norfolk, Battle Creek, Beemer, Hadar, Hoskins, Madison, Pierce, Pilger, Randolph, Tilden, West Point, and Wisner.
If the college is closed, the radio/TV stations will be asked to phrase the announcement as “the college is closed” so employees will know they need not report to work. As a general rule, if the weather is severe enough to warrant canceling classes, employees are not expected to be at work either. Stations will also be asked to announce that the decision on night classes will be made by 3:00 p.m. and the announcement will be made on the radio/TV stations, KHWK, Channel 22, web page, and automated phone message at that time. It is possible that classes will be held in the evening, even though daytime classes were canceled. If the college is closed, student activities are also cancelled.
If the campus opening is delayed (to clear parking lots, roads, etc.), employees should not report until the time announced. A delayed start means classes will resume a normal schedule at the time announced. (For example, if campus opens at 10:00 a.m., 10 o’clock classes will be the first to meet that day and employees should also report at that time.)
If bad weather occurs during the day, the college may close and information will be announced as to the time the college will close and if evening classes are affected.
Students and employees on campus will be informed of a decision to close the college through an announcement on the campus paging system or a phone call to buildings with no intercom access.
Credit and Noncredit classes on the Northeast campus are covered under the above procedures.
Decisions whether to hold classes in other communities will be made by the Regional Directors and they will notify the radio stations in their areas.
NIGHT CLASSES (Classes held 5:00 p.m. or later)
If the college was closed during the day, a decision whether or not to hold night classes will be made by 3:00 p.m. and will be announced on the web page, automated phone message, KHWK, and radio at that time.
It is possible that classes will be held in the evening, even though daytime classes were canceled. If the night classes are not held because of the weather, night-time employees will not be expected to report to work either.
ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
If the college is closed, all student activities are cancelled.
OFF-CAMPUS CLASSES
Regional Directors will make the final decision on class cancellation for off-campus credit and non-credit classes. The Regional Directors will notify the radio stations in their areas.
DISTANCE EDUCATION
Specific closing/cancellation procedures for classes delivered via distance education (ITV) are included in the Distance Education Faculty Handbook. Distance education faculty should review these procedures with their students.
It is recommended that instructors and students listen to their local radio or TV station prior to going to class. Important! Although the site you regularly participate from may be canceled, other sites at other facilities may not be canceled. Conditions may be different at these sites. If an ITV site is located at a high school, the site will not be used for college classes if the school was closed during the day. (See Appendix K& L)
Northeast Community College will attempt to use additional local radio/TV stations to announce class cancellations. Students at remote sites may also drive considerable distances to attend classes. To help assure that all students know when your class may be canceled due to weather conditions, the college suggests that faculty establish a CALLING TREE similar to that shown in Appendix M of the Distance Education Faculty Handbook.
